Mama's Boy

With this Sunday being Mother's Day, I decided to do something special for the woman that brought me into this world. Besides mailing a card and shipping a gift I let her choose the topic of my last blog of the semester. As the author of a very successful blog herself, (www.kathewithane.com), my mother has set the bar pretty high for me. Here goes nothing Mom!

With the sixth overall pick in this year's NFL draft the Cleveland Brows selected LSU's defensive end, Barkevious Mingo. At the draft, Mingo was accompanied by a very influential woman in his life, his mother Barbara.

Mingo grew up in a basketball loving house, with Barbara routinely challenging him to a game of one-on-one. What Barbara didn't know was that her son was sneaking around playing football. Like most mothers I assume, Barbara didn't want her son playing such a violent game like football for fear that he may get injured.

It wasn't until a co-worker convinced Barbara to attend one of her sons game that she realized he was not the one at risk of getting hurt, but rather him hurting someone else.

Fast forward six years to the NFL draft. After a storied career at one of the nation's top football schools, Barbara has no doubt that her son will succeed in the NFL, "I think he can handle himself."
Barbara says she will attend as many games as possible and cant wait to see her son, "Eat quarterback's."

Happy Mother's Day Mom!!!

No more "Super Teams" in the NBA?

The NBA playoffs are in full effect. The second round of the postseason got underway earlier this afternoon with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers each getting Game 1 victories in their respective series.

One thing I have notice watching these playoffs so far, is that each team has a so called "big two" or "big three". In other words, each team has one or two superstar players on the squad, who essentially carry the team. The team only goes as far as the star players takes them.

It all started in 2008 when the Celtics traded for Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen to go along with Paul Pierce. That is when the term "Big 3" was born. Now, almost every team has multiple superstars on the roster. For Example, The New York Knicks have Carmelo Anthony and JR Smith. The aforementioned Thunder have Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.

And then there are the Miami Heat. The defending champions are poised to repeat and with (the now 4 time league MVP) Lebron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh there is no reason why they cannot win it all again this year.

HOWEVER, the potential 2014 free agency class will have a huge impact on whether teams will be able to keep their star, big contract players. The salary cap and luxury tax will restrict teams from having big payrolls, which in turn means players will change teams.

The Heat are already weighing their options because they will not be able to afford James, Wade, and Bosh after the 2013-14 season.

The list of potential free agents in 2014 is incredible. Filled with current all stars and soon to be hall of fame players. The image below features some of the big name potential free agents in '14. To see the full list follow this link.... http://es.pn/XCsDST

The Time Has Come

Today, April 29th, 2013, an announcement was made that has the potential to change the way professional athletes are viewed in this country. In next weeks issue of Sports Illustrated, set to be released May 6th, Jason Collins, a 12 year NBA veteran announced that he is openly gay. Collins, became the first active player in a major American sports team to announce that he is gay. This is a landmark moment for ALL professional sports in the country.

Throughout the last couple years, there has been a growing speculation that there are "several" gay professional athletes in the National Football League, the National Basketball Association, and Major League Baseball (the three most popular sports leagues in America).

As you could imagine, the reaction of Collins' decision nationwide has been mixed. In this era of social media, people are taking to social networking sites to express their opinions on the first active professional athlete announcing that he is openly gay. The majority of the reactions on Twitter about Collins' decision has been positive. For Example:

- Kobe Bryant TWEETED this...
- Former President Bill Clinton had this to say..

There is a great possibility that this announcement will "open the gates" for more active professional athletes to come out and announce that they are openly gay. That all remains to be seen.

Women Rule

In late March, the most recognized name in professional MMA, the UFC, took a GIANT leap in the right direction. UFC President Dana White announced that the winner of the second ever female UFC fight  would coach alongside the face of women's MMA Ronda Rousey in the upcoming season of "The Ultimate Fighter." Cat Zingano and Miesha Tate's April 13 bout earned them a $50,000 bonus for "Fight of the Night." Zingano came away with the victory and was visibly emotional after the life changing event. With the level of competition that the female fighters are bringing, it make the fans wonder what took the UFC so long to get on board. White has been saying for years that the depth of female fighters in MMA will prevent them from, "ever" fighting in the UFC.

It seems as though White is quickly realizing how much of an impact the women in the sport are having. In the next three months, two more women's fight's are scheduled, including an April 27 bout at UFC 159 between former Olympic wrestler Sara McMann and Shiela "The German Tank' Gaff. If this fight has as much drama as the first two, expect  White to include at least one female fight for each card in the future. For now it appears as though women's MMA is here to stay in the UFC.
